Newcastle Police Department
The first Town Marshall for the Newcastle Police Department was Sam Dryer in October, 1965. In September of 1978, Newcastle Police Department recognized it’s “first” Chief of Police, Bill Carlton. Many things have changed since then. The Department has Full Time officers, including Chief Gary Norman, one K9 unit and Reserve Officers.
The call volume with the Department has increased on an average of 18% per year since 2003. Fortunately, most calls did not originate in Newcastle, but thanks to the fast thinking of the staff, they end here. No community is completely immune to crime, our current Crime Rate is 3.8 per 1,000.
The Department’s dispatchers handle calls for the Department as well as the Newcastle Fire Department, McClain-Grady County EMS and Bridge Creek Fire Department.
Dedicated to the community, the Department participates in the Shop with the Cop Program. The program was established to build positive relationships between police officers and the children of community. It is a very positive experience not only for the kids that are involved, but also for the officers. Part of the fundraising effort is a concession stand at the City’s Annual Fourth of July celebration.
